Colorado Springs’ Approach to Psilocybin Healing Centers

Under the proposed zoning rules, Colorado Springs aims to carefully regulate where psilocybin healing centers can operate:

  • Buffer Zones: These centers must be at least a mile away from schools, child care facilities, and drug or alcohol treatment centers to ensure a safe environment.

  • Restricted Locations: Psilocybin centers would be treated like medical offices, meaning no residential areas. Most locations for these services would likely be on the city’s far east side, near U.S. 24 and Powers Boulevard, or along certain pockets of the western boundary.

These zoning rules mirror similar restrictions on recreational marijuana stores, helping maintain a balance between access and community safety as this new industry emerges.

Why the Extra Precautions?

Kevin Walker, the city’s Planning Director, refers to psilocybin therapy as an “experiment” for Colorado Springs. By implementing strict zoning, the city hopes to introduce psilocybin safely while observing its impact. Although psilocybin has shown potential benefits for mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD, the city is cautious about how and where this new treatment becomes available.

Colorado Springs wants to maintain public comfort and safety, balancing the therapeutic potential of psilocybin with regulations.

What Does This Mean for You?

While these zoning laws may limit convenient access to psilocybin centers, they allow for controlled, licensed access to natural healing without overwhelming residential areas. Thanks to Proposition 122, which prevents outright bans on psilocybin, residents will have access to these services in designated areas.
